Just curious as to do I need to add a yeast nutrient as well.

Yeast Nutrient gives nourishment to your yeast so that it stays healthy throughout the fermentation process, you could try not using it but some members have reported bad smells in their wine which can be caused by a lack of nutrient, at the price its not worth the risk.

Totally agree, i will buy some yeast nutrient.

Thanks again.

Being a total newbie to WOW, I noticed several posters have used the Aldi Rio Doro juice, I hace noticed that some has 'Antioxidants' in it so does it have to be boiled before it can be used if at all?

There are so many juices in supermarkets with no preservatives or antioxidants why not use one of those instead.

Very good point, to be honest I hadn't checked before I bought but it's only two cartons, lesson learnt! The juices from Asda seem one of the cheapest at the moment 4 for £3, as with all of them it's a case of reading the label first,

Thanks Chippy-Tea.

Asda in Grantham hasn't had red grape juice for a while, the Lidl over the road was selling it but has recently closed for refurbishment.

I bought the WGJ in ASDA at 4 for £3 but the wife had already got some RGJ in Lidl at 99p a carton I think it was, both are 100 per cent grape juice not from concentrate. I can't remember whether ASDA had the RGJ, wasn't really looking for it I must admit.

I did notice that Sainsbury's have their 'Basics' Orange juice and Apple juice for 70p a carton so a little cheaper, just, for selection and overall price it seems ASDA have it.

I noticed that in one of the videos the glycerin was in a 38ml ASDA bottle, just looked it up and it's current price is 89P!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to have a glass of wine the shock was so great!

Boots used to stock it, but for some reason they don't now, but our local Superdrug has 200ml bottles for £1 29p, you have to ask at the Pharmacy counter.

I know making your own wine saves us money but surely there is no excuse for such profligacy!

We don't have a superdrug and have been paying the ASDA price for the smaller bottles (part of the monthly shop), it goes a long way so i am not too bothered about the price.

Hi everyone :thumb:!

Was introduced to this and given the link to this thread by my niece's partner on the weekend and ended up going to Wilko yesterday to buy some equipment!
Firstly I'd like to say a huge thank you to Chippy_Tea for all the guidance/videos and information .
So, after a good soaking for my new equipment in Milton fluid, I got my 1st batch on the go...
1ltr RGJ (Tropicana)
1ltr Apple & Raspberry Juice (Tropicana)
800gms Sugar
Two bag cuppa
1tsp Express Wine Yeast (Wilko)
1tsp Yeast Nutrient (Wilko)
1tsp Pectolase (Wilko)
1tsp Glycerine (Tesco)
Topped up to the base of the neck with cooled boiled water.
Hell of a scum on the top this morning but it was bubbling away nicely - temp strip was showing 20 degrees so about right yeah?

Had hold of some white grape juice in Asda today so my second batch will be made tonight, as the first batch but with WGJ & pineapple.

Hope it goes okay, I'll post when I have news :D

When you say topped up to the neck do you mean the shoulder like the one on the right in the picture below or do you mean to the base of the neck like the one on the far left?

If its the neck you need to put something under it now as it will escape over the next couple of days.

(The one on the far left has been degassed, stabilised and has had KwiK Clear added so has been topped up as it will no longer ferment)

20c is fine.

I cannot take credit for the video's i found them on You tube.

Okay, well thanks anyway for the other advice and tips & for posting the vids ;)

The one on the right, so to the shoulder then....
The RGJ/apple & raspberry has been on the go for about 30 hours & is bubbling every 10 seconds, the WGJ/pineapple has only been done about 4 hours and is already bubbling every 22 seconds! So, it all looks to be right at the moment :) Hope it turns out better than the two cider kits I did earlier in the year, plenty of strength but no bloody flavour :(

Well done for getting your first and second lot going Colin, we all have tales of the mistakes we've made.
'Er Indoors keeps reminding me of the time I laid down some Morello Cherry wine on top of a cupboard... in the summer... yes I know, I should have known better! World War 3 broke out as corks flew across the room soaking everything in Morello Cherry wine as I was frantically putting bottles in the deep freeze!

lol, cheers Gorty!!

I think everything has been done right so far, bubbling was very active this morning which is great!!

Am I right in thinking that I syphon off into another DJ when fermentation is complete with the crushed campden tablet, then top up to the neck & then leave for another week or so before bottling?

Wait until you think fermentation has stopped, take a hydrometer reading and if its close to .990 its done, if you don't have a hydrometer wait until you only see a bubble every couple of minutes (hydrometers take the guess work out)

Leave it for a further week in the same DJ, this allows the yeast to clean up after itself (failure to do this can lead to your wine giving you a bad head and possibly the s***s)

After this additional week rack into a sterile DJ onto a crushed campden tablet and add stabiliser (also called fermentation stopper) then degas, you can do this by either covering the neck of the DJ with a clean hand then shaking the DJ and releasing the CO2 (you have do this several times over a couple of days) or you can do it in a couple of minutes using a drill and degassing wand, you can buy these at home brew shops or make your own from a plastic coat hanger as i did, there is a video on how to do this here - http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=48971

Hi all, day four for my 'red' wine & day three for my pineapple wine - another question.... Do I give them a little shake to mix everything up again? Fermentation is going well, both are bubbling every few seconds & lava lamp effect is in full flow!
Thanks in advance. :)

I give them a swirl if the top looks hard and crusty, if you have the lava lamp effect you probably don't need to.

As there are now 57 pages on this thread and it would take me all day to read them all (I will one day though ;))........... could you recommend what the best juices or mix of juices are in your opinion please to make a nice dry white wine?
I cant do anything for at least week so no hurry :) but will be making my first WOW before the end of September. I'm confused now as to which recipe to go for and would rather follow someone that has already tried it. Cant wait :p
