Been busy over the last couple of weeks finishing off my bridge over the pond and getting the bee hives ready for bee's, If the summer is as good as this can't wait to sit back and enjoy the garden fish and bees instead of working in it all the time!

Actually had some scrap metal took away today it's a bit tidier now

Great looking bridge. I found my deck was rotten last weekend so I spent all week getting new timbrr etc and demolition the old one in the evening, as well as having my busiest week at work. Anyway got up at 7 out decking by 8 got it done by 4. Going to lay a few small flags and build the kids A raised veg patch.

I should have had a brew day today but as a secret brewer couldn't really go to work and brew with th diy to do. might make an excuse for next friday and brew.

Can I ask how old your deck was? and was it painted each year? It's one thing that bugged me as to how long it's going to last.

Looks great MD :thumb:

Did you soak the rope for a few days though before as it can shrink

It was soaked but also have left a loose end so that I can adjust it if it shrinks further still ;)

loving the whole look of your garden MD :thumb:

We got rid of our (much smaller) garden pond when we moved in, becuase of the risks of having toddlers around, and we put a lot of time and money into levelling the garden. Now it's got a massive trampoline and a swing and slide set for the kids, and the grass gets trashed with all the football practice... I long for the day I can rip all the grass up and set up a nice rockery, and ideally a piss off big brewshed

It was only 5 yrs old and no it wasn't painted each year . However the cause was plain to see a dripping hanging basket in one corner. The rot spread from below the hanging basket along all thje main beams. This time I cleared more of the ground away put it on bigger concrete blopcks and treated all surfaces especialy all cut ends. I also used arbour deck which is meant to be the dogs danglies of decking, so hopefully it will last longer this time.

Was all the timber tannalised? It shouldn't even look that badly weathered after 5 years, never mind rotted. Might be worth getting an expert view on what caused the rot. We have a D-rail fence where one post rotted through in 2 years. Replaced the post and it rotted through again. Rest of the fence was slightly grey, but no signs of rot. Turns out there was some fungus on the surrounding ground that particularly likes tannalised timber. He (the expert) suggested removing all the topsoil in a 5m circle, having the soil incinerated, treating the area with fungicides for 2 years and then fixing the fence. The guy that built the house suggested replacing the post, but soaking it in diesel for a week before 'planting.' Went for the 10 quid 1 week diesel option rather than the 2 year plan, and so far (4 years down the line) everything is looking healthy.

Muddy Disco - you should be hoping for 20-25 years before you need to start replacing bits

It was tannalised. I have also removed the top 3 " of soil and treated all the wood. I have never seen wood so rotten. I think there was also a problem with the waste pipe from the kitchen over flowing from the grid and soaking the underside of the joists this has now been fixed. Hopefully it will last.
