I started a beer kit about three weeks ago and for a while it seemed to be going okay. I had to go away because of work for a few days and when I got back the fermentation had stopped but the hydrometer still read about 20 but it should have dropped down to about 9. I stuck some more yeast in but it hasn't done any good so it's still sitting in my fermentation bucket not doing anything. It looks and smells okay so is there anything I can do to get it going or is it too late and time to put it down the sink? Any advice would be most welcome!

Sometimes the combination of bad initial yeast health and/or lack of essential nutrients can cause problems and it just wont drop anymore. I wouldn't chuck it unless it is off as it is probably worth drinking.

Bigyin has written an excellent "How To" called What to do with a 'stuck' fermentation that could give you some clues for future.

Your welcome, Bigyin put a lot of work into it as it is quite a common subject and something we have all experienced at some point. :thumb:
