From previous experience it'll never look perfect

If funds allow get it skimmed over with a decent plasterer, it might not cost as much as you thoght at the moment.

Ditto! we paid about about £80 per wall and £100 per ceiling.... the only room I papered just annoys me everytime I look at it... marks and bumps all over the place even after breaking my back filling and sanding it (22sqm room :shock:).
