I think I'm gonna give this a go;

Was planning a brew day this week anyway, repeating my AG#1 (MO + EKG + Fuggles) but hopefully with a slightly more sedate ABV (ideally 4.0-4.5% instead of 6.2%!), and reusing the yeast cake from a bitter that needs bottling.

By my calculations :nerd: i can just dump in the whole 3kg bag of MO plus a bit of FB and up the hop additions;
- I expect efficiency might drop off a bit
- If i lose a bit more liquid absorbed in the grain i can top up pre-boil to my usual volume
- I can check the gravity while waiting for it to boil and recalculate hop additions on the fly
- I reckon boil off should be the same as normal so even at the start of the boil, once i know the BG I can estimate the OG post-boil, and hence how much I'll need to liquor back to get my desired OG in the FV
- And if i know how much I'm going to liquor back at the end then i can factor that into my hop additions in the kettle before i even start the boil

All being well i should end up with about 11.3L post-boil somewhere around 1.070 and 50IBU'S, to which I'll add between 6-8L as required to bring me down to around 1.040 and 27IBU's.

What could possibly go wrong! :laugh8:

I'll explain it to you over a pint of mild..... Actually, maybe not :laugh8:;)

(What, to soon?)

Seriously, i think just writing it down helps get it clear in my own mind, even if it's just hieroglyphics to everyone else.

Will keep you posted athumb..

I'm probably overthinking it a lot, i usually do - but when it goes south (and it usually does at some point) i find it's easier to adapt if you already have a plan than to improvise from nothing.

Good article - thanks! That answers my initial question - I'll be doing bigger brews from now on acheers.
