Hi all,the missus is getting me a new kit for valentines?Im not complaining!Im going to do a better brew irish stout,so it will be ready for st Patricks day hoooray!was planning to steep some chocalate crushed malt and boil for an hour.I have 500g of it how much should I use?I was also going to add 1kg of dark spray malt.would this work?and would I have to boil the better brew lme aswell?was hoping just to boil the grains.Still unsure about partial mash so :drink: any advice greatfully taken onboard.Cheers .

Definitely a good idea to use the dark spray malt. Will add another depth to the flavour. Can not go wrong with the chocolate malt either. As for measurements I'm not sure. Depends on how much our making. I'm assuming its a 23L batch. I'm sure somebody will answer that for you soon enough. [THUMBS UP SIGN]

I'm not familiar with the Better Brew kits but, assuming its hopped malt extract then you won't need to boil it as this will have been done in the making of it.

Regarding your choc malt... I would recommend steeping 100g in 70degC water for 30mins and adding the result to your hopped LME when making up to 40 pints.

Edit: you can disolve your DME in the water whilst steeping your grains.

I get your point but you risk extracting tannins if you steep too long or at too high a temperature. With extract brewing you normally go on to boil the wort so, to achieve the same sanitation I guess you could bring your solution to the boil once finished steeping to kill off any nasties before adding the lot to your hopped wort.
