Reading though this thread why not try silicone 0-rings of the same size and shore rating, they're widely available IWI :hmm:

The original tube cross-sections did plug into the bottle better than the O rings I bought, but thanks for the idea. I'd want to find around 40 of them for just a few quid including delivery, otherwise I'd still be tempted to pay £13 odd for a metre of natural rubber tubing (including £6 odd postage) and cut some sections like the originals. The longer it goes, the more tempted i am to just go for the latter. I could easily waste more money in the meantime!

Why not use dairy silicone tubing, it's a lot cheaper. Is that size right 13mm ID with 3mm CS, ie 19mm OD. If so for the price of postage you can try an off cut of forum hose it's the same spec, the offer's there.

Thanks Vossy. Is it stretchy? - I'd assumed not... The 13mm ID needs to stretch to at least 18mm on the stoppers.

It's very stretchy, this is a pic over a 19mm Oxo wine bottle stopper and it'll go wider if heated. The problem you may have is that the cross section when stretched is dependent on shore strength so if you measure a o-ring not being stretched in situ it will have a different diameter to when in use, which is fine if you know the material, but if you don't it can lead to you buying the wrong item ie, a thicker o-ring than required hence it might not seal properly.

I've ordered 50 of these which I think will do the job. They are the same material as those above and the dimensions look perfect: 13mm internal diameter x 3mm profile. These have a circular profile - not sure if yours above do - but I think they'll work!
I've got the quart version of these bottles and they were called flagons. I've got 20 gallons worth, so that's 80 bottles. Many years ago they had Whitbread light ale in them and were supposed to be returnable. I simply kept them and built up my collection over several years during the 60s and 70s. The new black washers work well with them.

Right!

Kind Mr Vossy sent me a short length of his 1/2 inch (internal diameter) Silicone tube he supplies on this forum to try.

I cut them to around 8mm with a craft knife, oiled the stopper slightly, and pushed them over, using the rounded end of a table knife to get it over the last bit. The originals used to leave the grip sitting proud of the top of the bottle as well. The fit seems very secure.

They look very promising and the rubber is certainly stretchy enough. Certainly a much more convincing seal than the O rings I had, much like the originals. Only time will tell if they endure OK, but looks very promising - thank you Vossy1 :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Looks like a good solution - well thought of Vossy :thumb: Bonus is I have some of this, although need to be careful which bits I nick some from....

looks like you need to cut a few mm shorter

It's think it may be the thickness of the tube, rather than the exact length I cut that governs how far they go in, but (despite how it may look) the screw is well into the bottle.

...It's not that far off the Cidona picture anyway - my pic is close up and exagerates the gap.

scaled to approximately the same size

I think you can see my point :thumb:

I think 6 mm will be perfect.....

@morethanworts,
I tried Vossy's suggestion (with his tube) at the beginning of this year with a couple of my old bottles and bottled a brew back in March using the bottles. I opened one of these bottles the other day and the solution worked perfectly, the beer was lovely and had good head retention.

I seem to recall I cut mine to 5mm.

I took your advice and it did make a difference...

The one on the right is cut to 6mm. Both seal fine as far as I can tell. So they seem to last OK LeithR :thumb:

that is looking great morethanworts :thumb:

need to keep my eye out for a job lot of these bottles

but closer to me, I hope next time :hmm:

 really please it worked M  Though not the same application I'm using some of this hose which is over 5 years old and still going strong, so hopefully the bottle stoppers will last a fair while too.
