5 live phone in today.

He was caught doing 97 mph and at court he got off with a ban because he said if he couldn't carry on filming his latest show about driving people would lose their jobs, how can this be right when people lose their jobs every day for doing the same.

Because he's rich and famous.

They let off ( no jail time ) drivers who are stoned or p1ssed behind the wheel on a daily basis, and some of the driving bans are a matter of a few weeks.

Hardly surprising they let off speeders.

Let’s be honest, all of us who drive have broken the speed limit at some point and for me it has been way over the speed involved in this case ( I blame the 2 wheels )

It's like footballers fighting on the pitch...technically it's breach of the peace, assault or whatever you'll get done for in the pub but they get "fined" by the club or league or whoever. Rubbish.

Turns out he already had 6 points on his licence so he pleaded with them to give him 5 points so he wouldn't get banned, i wonder what the answer would have been if it was one of us who pleaded not to be banned because we need our car to go to work.

The 59-year-old star of Alan Partridge was behind the wheel of a Range Rover which was caught at 97mph on the M6 on July 29 last year.
Coogan already had six penalty points on his licence and wrote to a court to plead for a punishment which did not end in a ban, highlighting that he is expected to drive on the upcoming TV show.
Coogan argued for the magistrate to impose five penalty points instead of six, leaving him just below the level where an automatic six-month disqualification is considered.

I'm not sure they do. Drug and drink driving has no tolerances in court like speeding does.

There are loads of people driving around with 20 or more points on their licence.

Plenty of people going around with over 12 points and still got their licence.

The guilty person losing their job is not the same as innocent employees losing their jobs because the star of their show got banned. I'd agree a delayed ban would seem the best answer here.

Although the one change I would make to our criminal justice system would be to have fines as a set percentage of income like in some other countries. And make it the income declared to their mortgage lender and not what they declare to the taxman...

What about those without mortgages?

It is now here too

I quote....
The amount you’re fined depends on what the speed limit was and how much over it you were driving. It’s usually a percentage of your weekly income, up to a maximum of £1,000 (£2,500 if you were driving on a motorway).

It's £100 and 3 points if you're within tolerance though.

I beg to differ.. I’ve been hit on 2 seperate occassions, 20 years apart, the first did jail time and the most recent got a slap on the wrist

For drink or drug driving?

I had to look it up, because I seemed to remember it was different, but apparently it's not.

Both are an absolute minimum of 1 year ban. Apparently no exceptions.

Being in control of a vehicle, as you probably know, means effectively, you're say asleep in the vehicle or sat in it, but there's no intention to drive it. Generally, you wouldn't get banned, providing you're not ridiculously over the limit and you're just sleeping off a drink.

But if you're driving, or starting the car, bang. 1 year. If yours were 20 years apart, it starts at a year.

My original post is not about bans, although I do mention them, it is about jail time..
