Even at that price you would be looking at around 4 pence per litre of made up solution, and a 500ml bottle lasts a very long time.

However, that price is extortionate, shop around.

If its got to be no rinse then as above . Otherwise own brand oxyclean for the cleaning of yuck and caked on stuff and plain unscented uncoloured thin bleach for sanitising . Then the dreaded rinse and drain  :?

As before , source it outside of the homebrew market and pay a lot less . :thumb:

Does anyone use Star San or is it a nasty expensive Amercian invention we have no truck with?

I've been using Star San for my last 4 or 5 brews and its the best addition I ever made to my home brew kit

Easy to use, lasts ages and saves you so much time when sterillising 40 bottles for a brew!

I generally make up a batch when kicking a brew off, I think it's 1/2fl oz per 2.5 gallons, so stick that in the FV and give everything a rinse. When i'm done with it, I fill up some 5litre spring water bottles and store it away. You can then use the same soliution for steralising bottles or a keg when the brew is ready.

+1 for Star San :thumb:
Add some to a little spritzer bottle like you'd use in the garden for santising add bits and pieces as you come accross them too.

Terrific stuff.

Another Star San user. I really can't believe I used to go through all that 30 minute soak and loads of rinsing palaver!
Now it's a quick squirt or swish, wait 20 seconds then get on with it.

I've used star san, sani clean and videne, happy with all of them but now use videne only.
IIRC (Aleman can say for sure) star san and sani clean are acidified iodophors, possibly with a cleaning agent. I know it is possible to acidify videne but I've no experience of it.
Alternatively, acidified iodophor cleaners/sanitisers are available from Farm supply shops but at 5ltr you would need to buy and split :thumb:

I also use Star San. I use 1.5ml for every 1L of water in a garden spray bottle. Never had any problems, so far much quicker/easier than sanitising and rinsing.

I remember that stuff ! Back after BSE and Foot&Mouth loads of tack shops , general horsey places and farm shops had a backlog of it as it was one of the Govt approved chemicals for vehicle wash etc . Many still have it in the back of their storerooms and will sell it cheap if you ask them to look . I got some last year for cleaning out some pig accomodation for dead cheap ....used it all up though . Still .....worth a try

How long does star san keep in one of those garden squirter bottles?

I've heard that once it goes cloudy it's losing its magic powers.
Think it depends on the water you mix it with. We live in a hard water area and mine goes cloudy after a week or two but I've read on this forum that if you mix with bottled water then it lasts for months.
