Stainless steel workbench for gas setup

I'm have just bought a new gas setup to brew with and decided to buy a stainless steel workbench too.

My question for the gas brewers is, how hot is the bench likely to get underneath the burners and will I need extra protection on the bench?

Probably because wood is a poor conductor.

With the metal bench you cold just put a MDF square underneath the burner if the table starts to get hot. Or a chemistry Bunsen burner type matt.
