Hey,

This is only my second batch, and after a lame Geordie Lager attempt, i stepped it up too a St Peters IPA extract kit.

My question is about the OG and FG. I took an OG reading before pitching the yeast, and it was at 1046.
The instructions says that the FG should be around 1014, and approximate ABV is 5-5.5%
Shouldn't the OG then be around 1052-1056?
It may be that i didn't get a good sample, but i feel like i shook and stirred it well, before taking one.
Is there anyway too loose gravity from a kit, when i followed the instructions completely?

Ray

unless the instructions have changed....
I've made 2 of these kits, both the OG have been around 1.042-1.044 and gave final alcohol volumes around 4.4%.
So if thats your readings I wouldn't worry.
Both kits produced wonderful beers and although they took a few weeks to clear they were a bright and sparkly red colour.
To get the best of them they do need a good 8 weeks in the bottle I'm afraid, but one of the best kits I've made and well worth the wait.

sorry just noticed you said extract kits... I've made the normal 2 can kits

It is the two can liquid extract kit. I was just worried about the low OG, since a finished FG on 1014, wouldn't give the 5-5.5% ABV that they say.

But i guess i shouldn't worry too much, Im sure it will turn out great.

Thx for reply :)

most kits will give you a brew strength of around 4- 4.5% without you doing anything to them. If you make up to the instructions you will be fine.

I've only ever done this kit once, just looking at my brew notes i had a starting gravity of 1054. It Finshed at 1016 giving me 5.3% once i'd temp corrected.
Maybe you hadn't mixed it up enough, i stir mine until i get about 2 inches of foam on the top. The only other thing i can think of is that you might of added too much water. Have you checked the calibration on your fermenter, they are notoriously inaccurate

Yeah, i topped it off with water making it a total of 19 liters (app. 32 pints). I didnt stir as much as i shaked, but there was a good layer of foam. My hydrometer shows .003 lower then it should, but that ive made up for, so OG reading of 1046 should be right.

I will guess it comes down too bad blending then, and that my OG is higher then i measured.

Thx for replies :)
