I have been thinking of doing a split brew day and was wondering would it be ok to add hops to the wort the night before and boil as normal the next day.
Would I get any of flavours or anyother unwanted side effects from doing this?
Would it be best to wait till wort is cooled completely or add the hops when sparging is finished?

Your thoughts would be welcome

I've wondered the same thing, looking forward to the replies :thumb:

try it out and let us know :D

:hmm: I might just do that a bit later I need to brew anyway so unless someone tells me its a bad idea then i'm gonna do it watch this space :thumb:

I read somewhere, probably in a William Cobbet txt, that a lot of brewers in His day added a second batch of wort to the hops left after the first boil and adding extra hops for a second boil.

mmm :hmm: , i'd be a little reluctant to add the hops to the wort and then leave 24hr's before boiling. You would possibly extract more from the hops than you wanted.
Think about this-leaving hops to soak for 24hr's, you would allow them to be fully super saturated. Then you will boil them for 60-90mins. This will mean an equivalent of at least 4 hr's boil, possibly more/less. What does beersmith or promash say about IBU's with a 4hr boil?
There will be bits of stalk and the like in your hops. I don't fancy 'twig' aromas or flavours in my beer. My flower hops often have seeds in them. With 24hr's soaking you could possibly start them off-they could split and start to germinate. Probably not what you want in beer.

But then, on the other hand you may come across a fabulous way of brewing beer. But i doubt it. :wha:
I'd add the hops to the wort and then bring to the boil. Just as you are ready to boil. There's no (known) benefit to adding the hops for that length of time. And as far as i know most people who do split brews don't add the hops when collecting wort. I don't.

Just my thoughts.

Well bit the bullet and tried leaving the hops overnight in the wort I left the wort to cool off to room temp before adding hops.

I boiled next day about 15 ish hours later and all went well there was no off tastes or funny smells everything seemed normal even tasting the wort after gravity reading it tasted normal only time will tell so fingers crossed the beer turns out ok
