Hi,

I want to brew something similar to vodka. I will use most of it with mixers but I want to use a litre or so as shots. I have been looking for a sour apple or blackcurrant to make it similar to something from the Sourz brands. I can find standard apple and other essences but I wanted something sour.

Any ideas on how to get this? The only thing I can think of is get some cooking apples. Get out the juice by blending and pushing through muslin and concentrating on the cooker. Then add some green food colouring to add to the brew. Not sure if that will work. Could test it I guess but does that sound viable?

Thanks guys.

Hi RedHot Sourness in apples comes from Malic acid which you can buy from homebrew shops. So i would suggest using apple juice with malic acid added perhaps.

You mentioned wanting to brew something similar to Vodka. Vodka is a distilled product and the discussion of Distillation is not permitted on this forum. so any one wishing to post on this thread please refrain from mentioning the D word as the posts will get removed and warnings issued.

Thanks

No worries my comment was a general warning to all who post below, I don't want to have to lock a thread especially one which is a ligitimate one from the outset.

You are not going to get anything much above 20% and even then you will have to use one of the alcotec turbo yeasts and also use activated charcoal to clean it with

15% with champers yeast is easier imho, as for flavouring use a standard sodastream apple conc and add some cheap citric acid, job done

Would you say malic or citric acid would be better to make it very sour. I want this like one of those really sour sweets you get.

Malic is more sour than citric but adding more citric would also make it more sour. Malic is naturally found in apples.

OR.. Pop in some sour apple haribo into the bottom of the bottle of spirit base and leave for a couple of weeks (Until they are just clear gelatin). Pour through a paper coffee filter, BOOM!
If its simplicity you are after, Try the Alcoshots kits - Easy and Quick
