Put some of the cider I made last year in the shed and forgot about it so been aging for around a year. Just went to check on it and something has started to settle on the top of the cider which looks like saw dust? Any idea what this is and would it be ok just to siphon and filter it out?

Malolactic fermentation, perhaps it forms quite a granular, off white layer. I'd it smells a bit farmyardy then that is probably what it is. I'd it is you will have some nice scrumpy style cider. :thumb:

Yea thats what it looks like, just a lot thinner and not as much. Made about 60-70l from apples, but did it really lazily and tasted watery. I basically threw apples in a huge container, filled it up with water, added pectalose for a week then added lots of yeast nutrient and yeast and left it for 3 or 4 months, tasted watery and awful and threw away most of it. Wish I'd left it to age as it tastes a LOT better now!

Thanks for the help!
