Saw this on YouTube, looked intriguing

Had a look online and found a place that sells 2.5kg pelleted dry ice for around £30, that would do 6 refills at 400gm each so about a fiver a time.
Obviously you'd need space in freezer to store it but seems doable. That said I'm about to move up to a large cylinder but interesting to know if anyone else has tried it.

The main issue I see is that dry ice sublimates at around -70c, whereas your freezer will be around -20c at best. Unless you have a fleet of sodastream cylinders ready to fill in one go, you won't be able to store the dry ice for long enough between filling sessions.

BANG NO HAND.

if you fill a Co2 cylinder too full (70-80% can't remember) the pressure shoots up and it's very dangerous.

If it's not over filled at room temperature the Co2 pressure in a cylinder is in the range of 700-800psi and that is what the cylinders are designed to hold they are built with a good safety margin but abuse them at your peril!!

Atb.

I did think about trying but the minimum amount of dry ice for delivery I could find was about 6kg and I only have a couple of Soda stream bottles, so it won't be any saving there.

Regarding the comment above, the amount of dry ice needs to he measured by mass to avoid overfilling. It doesn't seem too difficult.

You could always do some of those experiments where things like flowers are put in the ice then smashed up,or is that something else?

Normally liquid nitrogen.

could make some bottle bombs with the dry ice. On second thoughts maybe not such a good idea….
