Smart phone. [poll]

I used to turn mine off when i went to bed but stopped when i read this can shorten the phones life (also handy as a back up alarm clock) SWMBO still turns hers off as she thinks the above reason is a load of rubbish and less charging is better for battery life and longevity as there is a limit to how many times you can fully charge the battery before it loses performance.

I reboot mine occasionally as i think it helps but may be wrong.

Do you leave yours on or turn it off?

Always left on and at home on work days. Work has restrictions on where you can use phones and they have to be kept in a set of special lockers...going to get it at break times etc is a right waste of time so I leave it at home. If the weather is bad I might take it and leave it in the car.
I mostly use it for internet browsing and alarm clock as no one ever phones me or very rarely texts me..

I don't have a smart phone and am reluctant to get one. Everyone I know lives via this device as an interface to reality (including SWMBO and the 2x daughters) and I have no immediate desire to upgrade from the objectively crap phone I was given when SWMBO did.

What instructions are being sent via these devices, for the purposes of the senders and the obedience of the holders?

Same here Clint, I don't give my mobile number to companies so the only people that contact me on it are family members etc, i kind of agree with Slid when i go in the brew room at the end of the shift there are lots of people sat around staring at their phones and hardly speaking i guess phones have now taken over from newspapers and porn mags in these places.

Always on, airplane overnight, silent all the time. If someone calls and I miss it I'll call them back.

As for battery life. Its my understanding its all about the charging cycles with modern day batteries. Turning on and off again should do diddly squat to battery life.

If the phone is on 24/7 it will need charging more often than if turned off for 8 hours every day another thing the on 24/7 crowd tend to do is charge the phone all night which I have read doesn't do the battery any favours.

Modern phones with Lithium Polymer batteries you can pretty much do whatever you like. It won't shorten the battery life. The only thing to be aware of is to not run the battery to flat and then leave it switched off for a length of time (talking weeks here) as Li-Po batteries don't like being stored flat or near to flat. If you were to leave it switched off for a long period then charge to 50 - 70% first. This won't apply to most people though. I'm an Electronics Engineer (proper one with qualifications) so I know what I'm talking about.

Personally I leave mine on pretty much all the time and set to do not disturb meaning only starred contacts can actually make the phone ring i.e. my wife, dealer, etc. Plugged in and charging overnight as I use it for my alarm clock.

My only gripe is how hard it is to buy a new battery nowadays... most of my phones get replaced due to dwindling battery performance rather than anything else.

Regarding battery, new batteries to keep them in top shape do not allow to go below 40% and unplug from charging as soon as they reach 100%. Don't leave charging for hours after that, as it just tops it up when falls below 100% - not very good for the battery.
You can buy battery for most of phones, but some are very hard to open and when it comes to apple phones it can make your phone unusable - phones detect not original part.
