I'm very sorry to hear that Betty Stoggs has thrown in the towel. Frankly I'm surprised as they had, I thought, the right balance between regional and commercial. Some jolly good, quaffable ales, too, if, often, just a tad sweet for my palate.

That's very sad. I wonder if the strategy to grow via bottled beers in the the bigger supermarkets ultimately undid them. The margins in that sort of trade are negligible and with costs rising everywhere the challenges are obvious. Thoughts with all the individuals affected.

Unfortunately I have never tasted any of their beers. Export costs are having a major impact after Brexit. The pound also crashing doesn't help

All joking a side it must be a fierce industry to be in. Profit margins must be tight, the jump in the cost of electricity alone would be enough to put must in difficulty

Yep I'd imagine the only way to make it now is to keep everything in house as a taproom or owned pub model to make sure you have the margins to cover the input increases. I would imagine they were not able to service their debt and likely couldn't get suppliers to give them credit. But who knows.

Real shame I always enjoyed their beers when I could get them, sadly with all the issues in the pub trade at the moment I suspect they won’t be the last to go.

In better news, Pete Brown reporting a consortium with links to Thornbridge have bought Kelham Island Brewery so Pale Rider will ride again. Very tough times out there for breweries and pubs. Wine industry suffering too - not least from the weak pound.

That is good news. I passed Thornbridge Hall and close by Kelham Island today. It was fate 😀

It’s really sad, I loved drinking their beer on holiday in Cornwall. No chance of getting it anywhere round here in SE England, although I did notice it in Tesco in Cornwall it’s not in my local Tesco. I guess it couldn’t compete with the hipster looking cans with snazzy graphics. More old school beers than double hazy NEIPAs and raspberry sorbet sours that seem to be the rage in the “craft beer” bit in Tesco.
