I don't know how to work it out mathematically or scientifically but i use about 20g aroma hops plus steep hops. The only thing i have found with lots of aroma hops is that you really have to leave your beer to condition.
The amount of aroma hops also depends on the hops to a certain extent. I'm fairly sure you can't 'over do' aroma hops. Not without being silly. I use 50g Nelson Sauvin last 15 and 50g same for steep in my NZPA and it's just about right for me.

Start off with an amount you think should be ok and if it needs more add more next brew.

Thanks guys. Didn't mean to hijack the thread. Anyway hopefully next week I'll be doing a brew - my last one (stout) is in bottles conditioning, and now the nights are drawing in it will soon be cool enough in the garage to put somethink in my KK. So I'm thinking of a nice simple 1.040 ish bitter maybe just using Fuggles (as I have some). If it happens I'll stick a recipe up.
Cheers

On all of my single hop brews I've tended to chuck in 50G at the start, 20G at 15 minutes and 10G at 1 minute. I've yet to make something that wasn't a nice pint. :) However, I'm having too much fun mixing stuff and tonight have kegged the following (23l brew length) :-

Amount Item Type
4.80 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) Grain
0.40 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt -120L (120.0 SRM) Grain
0.10 kg Wheat, Torrified (1.7 SRM) Grain

Boil for 90 min Boil Ingredients
Boil Amount Item Type
90 min 25.00 gm Boadicea [7.60 %] (90 min) Hops
90 min 25.00 gm Progress [6.00 %] (90 min) Hops
15 min 15.00 gm Brewer's Gold [4.60 %] (15 min) Hops
15 min 1.00 items Whirlfloc Tablet (Boil 15.0 min) Misc

Have got a lovely Tetleys / John Smiths Bitter type colour which ended up at around 4.8% and tastes awesome. I intend to repeat this brew tomorrow but am going to up the crystal to 600G, drop the Terrified Wheat and exchange the Brewers Gold for Amarillo. Might even replace my preferred SO4 with Windsor or Nottingham too for a change. :)

Thats 100% what I love about AG you can choose to swap all 11 players to see what happens or you can just slightly tweak the same 'team' to get it just how you want it :D

Cracked this open tonight - bloody lovely pint :thumb:

It was in the FV for two weeks & only been in the keg for a week so got a little time to go - but I can tell already it's my best pale ale yet - and the clearest :D

I think I've almost cracked the problem I've been having with chill haze too

I really enjoyed that recipe

How do you think you cracked the haze problem, anything different that you have done?

I've always boiled for 60 minutes (time constraints, evaporation issues) but on the last few brews I've been boiling for 90mins and adding a teaspoon of gypsum to the boil and it's definitely improved the chill haze issues.

I guess I'm securing a better hot break from the longer boil and the added calcium is supposed to help.

Funny you should mention the 90 minute boil. The brew I'm drinking now (recipe in this thread) came out crystal clear from the very first pint out of the cornie keg. All of my previous AG's (three of them) have come out pretty cloudy and I even went to secondary on one with still the same problem. This one I decided to boil for 90 minutes and I also put the fermenter into the fridge for a couple of days after day 7 before racking to keg.

Now I'm not sure which of the two changes I made have fixed it (possibly both) but the difference was incredible. So much so that I have again boiled for 90 minutes and again this will be going into the fridge prior to kegging.

First gold is a great hop, we probably will be seeing a bit more of this hop in the future
