Does anyone know if there are any extract kits available that are similar to Hobgoblin Or King Goblin Ruby/Dark ale/beer please.

Thanks Slid, I guess just a pan to boil the chocolate and Crystal grains up and a simple cold water to cool would be needed?

Looks promising. Was maybe going to try a conkerwood or st Peter's ruby next. Don't know if either of those would be similar...

I wouldn't bother with Conkerwood, I was distinctly unimpressed when I brewed it.

When you say "extract kit" do you mean a 2-can kit with no hopping? If so, I doubt you'll come out with something as good as Hobgoblin. However, if you can get hold of a 12L or 15L stock pot and do a boil, I think this kit will come out in the style you're looking for:

I've done lots of their recipe packs and they are good, a sort of halfway-house to AG brewing. No need to be intimidated by the boil, you can do it on the hob in an hour and it's reduced-volume, so you add it to the FV when finished and top up with cold water. Pity they don't do a Hobgoblin recipe pack as I'm sure you could come up with one using extract rather than mashed grains.

Thanks for the replies gents.

I am going to brew the bad cat imperial red next. Has good reviews and is nice and strong.

I have a couple of large stainless pots I can cook the grain for a brew up in.
As i say, thank you for the advice and as soon as I pluck up the courage I will definitely try the Hobgoblin recommendation Darrellm has suggested.

I think they dont do it any more but if you start a new thread and ask somebody for the Coopers Hop Gobbler recipe I am sure someone will point you in the right direction. The coopers used to have a part of their site that had many recipes using a basic coopers kit with a few additions such as steeped grains etc to clone some beers hence the name coopers hop gobbler

Here's the recipe

Hop Gobbler
(25 Litres)

As the name might suggest, this recipe takes inspiration from a popular commercial Ruby Beer, which lies at the hoppy end of BJCP Style; Northern English Brown Ale 11.C. Classic English hops (Fuggles and EKG) and Chocolate Malt combine to supercharge the English Bitter kit. The chocolate malt grain requires some extra preparation time but the final result makes it worth the effort. Most brewing specialist stores offer cracked grain or you can crack it yourself by placing in a plastic zip-lock sandwich bag and using a rolling pin.

Ingredients
  • 1.7kg English Bitter
  • 1.5kg Thomas Coopers Amber Malt Extract
  • 500g Coopers Light Dry Malt
  • 100g Chocolate Malt grain
  • 100g Crystal Malt grain
  • 25g Fuggles Hop pellets
  • 25g East Kent Goldings (EKG) Hop pellets
  • Coopers commercial ale yeast , English Ale yeast or yeast with the kit
  • Coopers Carbonation Drops

Sorry but I have to disagree.

I have brewed this ale and it is nothing at all like hobgoblin or king goblin.

The colour isn't the same and the taste is a million miles away.
