I know this term gets used a lot but I was doing a bit of "research" (i.e. google-searching) into the term trying to find its origins...found quite a few interesting sites however the article on this site is quite enlightening...

It seems the term session beer comes from the fact that licensing laws meant that pubs were open only 4 hours at a time (back in ye olde tymes) and so drinkers preferred beers that they were able to drink for 4 hours without getting completely smashed and that they didn't get bored of the taste...

Dad had a pub and I can remember him calling time at around 3pm. I think the lads then had 10 or 15 mins to finish their pint. Then the pub shut then till around 6 or 7pm, that takes me back. Funny thing I've done a session beer with my last brew, I'm going to bottle this one today as it happens, this brew is about 3.5% so will be just about ready when the son in law stays later on this year. I always try to brew a stronger beer for myself as I will drink say 2 pints and enjoy that better. I've never done a brew as low as this before, and I had a sup the other day and it's not got the mouth feel that I was hoping for. Never mind it may get better with a few months in the bottle.
