Thank you all very much for your replies and your knowledge I have learnt a lot just from this post ! Is it possible once in my secondary for a week batch prime it and fill the bottles using my tap on the FV ? ( Sorry if I am coming across as stupid AGAIN ) just need to know these things

Jordan, just to clarify... if you're going to rack it to another FV to clear for a week you'll then need to rack it back to the first FV to batch prime and bottle.

Don't wish to sound like a broken record but buy yourself a bottling wand for about £6. It'll be money well spent.

Can you only use a bottling wand if your FV has a tap ? It's just the primary which I will be racking back to doesnt have a tap.

You could use a bottling wand with a length of syphon tube I would think

The wand is a length of rigid plastic with a spring loaded valve on the end. You present your bottle to the wand and when it touches the bottom of the bottle the valve opens. Cuts out any sucking or opening/closing of taps and minimises splashing.

Isn't an initial 'suck' needed? I'm assuming with the use of the tongue to hold open the valve

you put the bottling wand in the tap on your FV gravity does the rest or if you dont have a tap then its a length of syphoning tube attached to your bottling wand then into the FV give it a quick suck and stick it in the bottle and the spring loaded valve does the rest :thumb:

Gotcha mate ordered one today , does anyone happen to crash cool there brews ? or just rack to a secondary at the same temperature the primary was at ?

Putting it in a cool room or on a concrete floor even in summer makes a difference. If you have a fridge big enough then crash cooling will work. Unfortunately I haven't got a fridge big enough for 12 gallon fermentors

likewise mate not a chance , dont have a cold room in the house either :|

If you can get the temp down all the better anything bellow 15c would be good. If you have a concrete floor that works wonders.

I honestly don't think there is anywhere in my house could get that sort of temp mate.

Sorted somewhere to cold crash now , my shoe cupboard has a concrete floor, took a thermometer reading of 10'C so gonna crash it in there.

Just wondering if this a good idea as you'll have to move it out of your shoe cupboard come bottling day which means you'll stir up some of the sediment. Or will the efficiency of the cold crash drop so much out of the wort that the inconvenience of a bit of sediment being stirred up in the move worth it?

Yeast usually compacts quite well so isn't usually a problem. I have to manhandle a 60l fermentor onto a table (with help) and that doesn't have any adverse effect.
