I've just come back from a few days away to find one of my racked wine demijohn without a rubber bung, some random late fermentation, and a slight dent in the ceiling tiles above it. I was never going to use screw caps before but now I have evidence!

In all seriousness though, I can't find the bung anywhere. Does anyone have a solution to this kind of thing other than wrapping a plastic bag around the top of racked wines (secured with rubber bands) for the first six months?

You're lucky the bung blew before the DJ.

Not that I've yet made anything long-term, mine stay under traps, or I may still use a drilled bung with the hole stuffed with cotton wool. There are safety bungs, plastic jobs with a pressure release valve.
