Has anyone ever tried saffron in a beer? I considered chucking some into a sweet stout. . .

Randy Mosher has a recipe for a Saffron Tripel in "Designing Great Beers." It looks really good. Can't seem to find any saffron though!

I tried it in a Belgian Strong Golden ale with lemongrass. Very subtle...(i.e. can't really taste it!)

And yes, i have been lurking here for nearly 1 1/2 years without posting. Thanks for all the brilliant tips and hints!

Saffron can be found here, amongst other places http://home-garden.shop.ebay.co.uk/Food ... 86.c0.m282

Ebay is quite a good place to get expensive things like saffron, vanilla pods etc on the (relative) cheap. I'd be interested to try this in a beer, but I guess you'd need a very light tasting beer, and perhaps a lot of saffron. I can't imagine you could taste it in a stout!

A wise man once said "If you can identify the spice by the taste, you've used too much".

I like the idea of using saffron - but of course it is very, VERY expensive.
