Interesting... I'd never considered that, although with the way it floats around I'd say it's got a very similar density to the wort.
Hydrometer measures what ever is suspended in the sample, if Rod had let it settle or kept it out he may have got a lower gravity reading.

That's a fair point, this is the first time it has happened i am always there or there abouts, i'm putting this one down to the beer gods
Where do you take your sample from Rod?
 
From the tap on the kettle, it's the first time it has been way off in 2 years off ag brewing
Quite alright to take a sample from the kettle, but usually just before flame out. Taking samples from the kettle after cooling can give a false reading through the stratification of the dissolved solids.
 
Biggest brew I have done so far is on, pushing the limit of the grain basket 7.4kg I expect effiency will take a big hit today
