I did see this on FB but couldn't find it anywhere online, has it been confirmed?
Confirmed by Graham's brother and close friends. Died of septoceamia. Very sad.

Probably the most important British HB writer ever. He was a member on Jim's a few years back and it was easy to see the man's knowledge was unsurpassed.

Did read this yesterday :-(

He will live on for a very long time in his fantastic book.

Sad to see well respected brewing authors move on.
Does anyone still have Ken Shales or David Line books from the 70s. Latter must have been one of the first to publish recipes for clones of commercial beers 'Brewing Beers Like Those You Buy'. Sadly I got rid of my copies when I thought I had given up brewing some years ago .

I think it's still in print.
I'm pretty sure that I have a copy or two in the shop - I'll check on Monday when I'm back at work...

Crikey. R.I.P. I've still got a very well-worn copy of his first book knocking around. Very rare that I refer to it now, but I learned an awful lot from it 'back in the day'.

Following the news of Graham Wheeler's death I decided that I would use one of his recipes for my next brew. I chose the TT Landlord, which has long been one of my favourite English ales. I had held off from brewing it before, as I have never been able to find the specified Styrian Golding hops in any of my LHBS, but today I decided to go for it, substituting Williamette for the Styrian Golding. All went relatively smoothly, other than my digital thermometer packing up during the mash, so not sure how close I kept to 66 C. The chilling went well and when I transferred to the FV, the stick-on thermometer strip read 18 C, with an O.G. of 1.047 (5 points over target). Pitched with CML real ale yeast and put in the brewfridge, which is currently set at 21 C in the hope of restarting a stuck AIPA, which stalled at 1.025.

Rest in peace Graham

Really sad news. BYOBRA was the first homebrew book I got and really got me started in understanding how it all works even though I never actually brewed that style.

I have a packet of Styrian Goldings in my Freezer and I like the idea of doing a brew in memory of Graham Wheeler. What recipe did you use?

BrewersFriend have:
  • 4.25kg Maris Otter
  • 0.36kg Torrified Wheat
  • 30g Black Malt
  • All Mashed at +/-66*C for 90 minutes.
  • 30g EKG Leaf Boiled for 90 minutes.
  • 30g Styrian Goldings Pellets Boiled for 90 minutes.
  • 20g Styrian Goldings Pellets Boiled for 10 minutes.
  • Yeast (Nottingham?) Pitched and fermented at 19*C.
But another recipe I looked at didn't include the Torrified Wheat or the 90 minute boil time!
Many thanks.:gulp:
