i have read several of you guys use half a camden tablet to treat th tap water in hard areas.

Can this be added 'mid-brew' or must it be added to just the water before you start!? :?

cheers guys!

as i'm only a kit boy, i woul have to add all the water to the FV first, thn the contents of the cans, are there any reasons all the kits say do it the other way round!?

They don't take into account adding campden tablets. I would add the whole amount of water to the fv (so 23L minus the volume of the kit) and treat it with 1/2 a crushed camden tablet. I would then take the required amount of water (6 pints?) from the fv to heat with the contents of the kit before returning the lot to the fv.

in that case i could....

put 29ltrs cold tap water in the fv, add 1/2 tablet

Boil 6lts in a pan - that would be quite pure!?

add the contents of both cans and six pints boiled water to a small bucket, mix well, add to fv, wait till the right temp, add the yeast.

does that sound right!?

No, 23 litres minus the volume of the kit (eg 3L? for a 2 can kit), so about 20L or so. Put this in the FV and add 1/2 crushed ct.

Take some treated water from the fv (however much your kit instructions say to heat up to mix with the kit - I think this may be around 6 pints / 3 L but I can't remember), heat it in a pan with with the kit ingredients. It doesn't have to be boiled if the pan is sanitised. Add straight to the fv and mix well, trying to aerate the mixture. Hopefully the temp will be in the right ballpark for the yeast.

I add a few litres of hot water to my FV, throw 1/2 a camden tablet in & dissolve, pour the kit in, dissolve the sugar in a pan, pour that in & stir.

CT's work instantly pretty much, adding them to a couple of Ltrs of water then adding the bulk to that sounds fine to me.

I managed to do the muntons kit, it ended up a bit arse about face but after mixing the temp was spot on 18c!! the yeast went straight in.

not much happening this morning when i left for work, i did get a text at lunchtime saying, 'your beers driving me mad, constant bubbling. oh and its almost full to the lid with foamy stuff'

that cheered me up!! :thumb:
