Hi was thinking of buying a refractometer. Can someone confirm that they are not temperature specific, that is they do not need to be corrected for temperature like a hydrometer. I was thinking it might be useful to use them at hot stages of brewing to get measurements of first runnings, second runnnings at what not to confirm consistency of brewing stages.

You put a few drops on the glass, closed the lid and wait a few seconds for the temp to come down a bit (30c i think). Only takes a few seconds for this to happen. The refractometer should have auto temp adjust built in.

Keep in mind that a refractometer will give you the SG but it won't give you the FG without using one of the online tools. You put in the starting brix reading and the final brix reading and it works it out for you.

I usally use both a hydrometer and refractometer to just double check everything.

I got one of the cheap Chinese one off Ebay and its over a year old and still working fine. Just remember to calibrate it before use.

:drink: thank you

I do a calibration at start of every brew, just use it to check how things are progressing when on the " hot side "

Some are sold with Automatic Temperature Correction, some aren't. The price difference is negligible so you may as well get the ATC model.

ATC only applies to the temperature of the device compared to the standard temperature and NOT the temperature of the sample ;)
