Hey. I just set my first kit going last night (Better Brew IPA) and already thinking of my next beer.

One which i have tried in the past and never managed to find anywhere else was one called "Red Erik", a wonderful fruity deep red beer, really nice and full bodied, unlike any fruit-related beer I've tried before (e.g. miles better than that sickly overly sweetened overly sour Timmermans strawberry stuff...urgh)

I googled it and found on their site that it's brewed with the addition of a selection of berries which they claim is the way they get the deep red colour and fruityness.

I have tried every "ruby" or "red" ale since and none have quite been the same.

My question is: is this something i can have a chance of replicating even slightly by using a beer kit (St Peters Ruby Ale for example, which is good but not nearly as good) and a pile of berries? Or is this futile?

Don't suppose anyone has tried Red Erik and/or might be able to point me in the right direction?

Cheers!

I remember trying a lager called Red Erik in the early 2000s. It was a light ruby colour that weighed in at a hefty 6% abv. It certainly didn't contain berries and was not an ale however.
Possibly the best red ale that I've ever tried was at the GB Beer Festival a couple of years by the name of Royston Red. It's only a seasonal ale fdrom what I understand, which is a shame as it was as close to perfect as a beer gets for me!

Back on the subject, I know that a lot of brewers, myself included, like to add fruit syrup (a good range of which can often be found in any Polish food shop) to their beer, either during the boil or before adding the yeast.
