What software do you use for designing your recipes. Ive tried a few but settled with beer engine. It seems simple to use but do you find that the ibu for hop additions sometimes dont ring true?

I use qbrew (using tinseth for bittering), not flawless but it is free and runs natively in linux.

I am familiar with what the numbers mean for my beer, which is more important to me than getting any additional features. I can set multiple alarms on my phone so I have no need of timers.

I like beersmith, not tried any others but comes with lots of free recipes under "addons" and has a free trial so if u dont like it nothing lost, maybe a few recipes gained. Will say it has alot of stuff im yet to fully use or understand even after an all grain brew.

As i was saying using beer engine just made up a recipe for bitter. 3460g pale malt 180g crystal malt and 25g challenger at start of boil. The IBUs of that should be 26 but on beer engine it says 0 how come????

Click on your Challenger hop, make sure "fixed" is unticked and press recalculate

If not...go to "Editors" and make sure you have the correct A/A % for Challenger

Beersmith all the way for me.
He's added 'cloud' integration now so you can store your favourite recipes online. I'm hoping that's the first development stage of an iPad version.

I've used Beer Engine and Beer Smith 2. My trial for Beer Smith 2 has now expired, but it doesn't seem to stop me using the software. I'll be buying it next week when I get paid anyway. I like that you can also use it to log the whole brew, right down to tasting notes and carbonation volumes etc, and I've found the inventory and shopping cart tabs invaluable!

just cant understand why 0 min hop additions dont register on the ibu display. Ive copied a recipe from a book that says it has 34 ibu total but when put onto beer engine it says 0

Try uninstalling and then download the programme again

If you have any recipes on there already save them to browser first or you will loose them

Just re-read your post....Hops at 0 mins wont give you any bitterness (or very little at best)

i know that but if you have a copy of graham wheelers british real ale try putting a recipe in to beer engine. Most of the bitter recipes from the book add hops at 0 mins then again at 70 mins. In the book it gives the correct ibu on beer engine when ive put the recipe in it gives 0 ibu or very low anyway

I am pretty sure this is the case for beer engine but it has been a while since I used it and you probably know this but, just in case.

The time for hop additions are how long they are in the boil, not the time from the start of boil. If you are adding the hops at the start then you should put them as 90 mins or whatever your boil time is, not zero.

Apologies if I have got the wrong end of the stick about what you are asking.

Ah I see what might be wrong, or maybe not. Are you, me, BeerEngine and GW working the same way around. ie... If you boil for 1hr and put your hops in at the start of the boil...that is @ 60mins.
Not questioning your/my knowledge...if you know what I mean?
