Hi there I am planning on starting off my first beer kit this weekend and I have one small thing which im not sure about.

The lid on my fermentation vat.

Should I make a hole in it and attach an air lock or just leave it sort of resting on top of the bucket?

If I do need to add an air lock is there a good method of making a clean hole in the plastic lid?

Sorry for being such a noob :D

Just clip the lid on. There's no need to ferment under an airlock.

The lid probably won't seal properly anyway, but if it starts bulging, just uncrack a little bit to let the excess carbon dioxide out.

If you want to fit an airlock, a drill normally works for me ;)

28 mm copperpipe is just about a perfect size to melt a hole
in the lid to fit an air lock,

just add a little heat and itll slide straight through,
also perfect size to fit a tap to the f/barrell..
