Evening all

I am going to attempt a pumpkin ale this week and I was just wondering if anyone had done one before?

If so any tips or advice?

Cheers

I have bought tinned pumpkin from Tesco just roast it the same as fresh as far as I'm aware

Looking at some recipies it might be worth sticking some cinnamon or cloves or both!
Wait until end of October and Pumpkins will be every damn where:lol:

There is a recipe for pumpkin spice mix on the Betty Crocker web site

Blimey, Betty Crocker, she still going:lol:
If your other half cooks, perhaps you might have a tub of mixed spice in the house, could bung some of that in perhaps:)

I did a pumpkin ale last year and I would say that the Greg Hughes recipe is not bad, though I would change the following things if I did it again:

1) The amount of 'gourdy' taste-I added a whole roasted pumpkin to the mash and some in the FV towards the end. It was a little overpowering.

2) The above probably happened because I only added a very small amount of bittering hops. I would probably add something like goldings at the end to compliment the pumpkin flavour.

3) I added cinnamon and star anise. In hindsight I would probably only add the cinnamon.

A very nice beer but it felt like it was lacking something-I would probably make it a little stronger too.

Good luck!

Thank you for the advice I'm going to brew it this weekend so I'll give you all an update 😐

Reading a recipe from the US and it recommends adding the roasted pumpkin (butternut squash type) to the boil rather than the mash. For spices they use cinnamon nutmeg and ginger with a touch of vanilla. They steer clear of pumpkin pie spices.

I have read that you can get clarification issues from adding it to the boil did they mention if that was the case?

It does cover this in the article accompanying the recipe but says that the boil method ale is crystal clear.
I have not brewed any pumpkin ale yet so cannot vouch for either method

Was bout to say that, if you waited till free Halloween the pumpkins will be dirt cheap!

I think is was only £1.20 a tin so I never broke the bank but I'm tempted to give it a go with fresh
