Here's something I picked up somewhere else.

I have been having trouble finding a suitable C02 source in my area ( south east England). What I have done is buy a 2kg fire extinguisher, taken the horn off and attatched a co2 regulator which is the same fitting!! Then I taped the trigger handle together, set the regulator and hey presto a c02 set up for my 3 cornies for less than £40.00. Then I just get the local extinguisher guy to fill it up for £7.00 Bargain!!!!

Cor he's expensive my guy that fills my welding co2 charges £3, Were cheap upnorth! but fire extinguisher guys are the best for co2 top ups! Even fill pub bottles.

CO2 fire extinguishers have a long dip tupe and are designed to vent liquid CO2 very quickly, do not use them unless this dip tube has been modified/removed.

You would not consider using a pub gas cylinder inverted would you? Same difference, as that would get liquid CO2 into your reg.

There's an old foam extinguisher at work being used as a doorstop. It's literally just the metal flask (nothing attached) with what looks like approx 25mm thread on the top. I think it's operating pressure is 7 bar - tested to 9 bar? Could I just find a regulator for it and fill it up (through the regulator?)

No, You need a CO2 extinguisher to do this . . . . Must admit I have my own 6.35 Cylinder and a 3Kg cylinder that I can't get filled . . . I'm thinking of going down the fire extinguisher rout again myself . . . just for the fish tank . . . . I can't get a 6.35 in the lounge . . . She would notice
