Well, since i'll possably, probably, most deffinatly be making the move to AG brewing either around Christmas or end of March when I get back from my next detactment, I would like all you AG brewers out there to post recipie ideas and a reason why I should choose your recipie for my first brew.

Which ever recipie I choose, the person who posted it will get a couple of bottle through the post to review it.

To give you an idea of what I drink, pretty much anything bar stout. So come on guys post away.

well if you dont mind going for a more complicated recipe as your first, EB's Beefuggled looks damned tasty! haven't tried it myself yet though.

My Rauchbier recipe is the best i've ever brewed to date and is heavier on the malty flavours, but i prefer a maltiness to hop character.

Wez gave it the thumbs up :thumb:

Not too fussed on how complicated it appears. I can soon write myself an idiots guide. Thats for the 2 ideas BS.

Hi Bobo, From my limited experience I found Coniston Bluebird, which was my first brew, a pleasant drink and fairly straight forward to do.

Bobo - iirc when you joined the forum you had a lager brew on the go, maybe someone has a recipe for a nice light golden ale using some typical hops for a lager :hmm:

ok so far we have

BS - His Rauchbier and EB's BeeFuggled

Kingfisher - Coniston Bluebird

Vossy1 - styrian stunner

Any more for any more, Wez it doesn't have to resemble lager in any way. I am partial to the odd pint of mild, ipa etc. Like i said, i'll drink anything except stout.

Carolines Fine ale - Pale malt and goldings it doesn't get much simpler or finer than that

I would have said CFA also but without water treatment mine turned out to be bland.
That's why I repeatedly made SS as the Styrian hops stand out more than Goldings.
That reminds me...I must try a CFA again :hmm:

I reckon near all single varietal hop, all pale malt recipes, would be good for a first brew.

how do you think something like this would go

4.5kg Pale Ale Malt
225g Crystal Malt
225g Amber Malt
110g Chocolate Malt

and i'll let someone else suggest hops and yeast

I like the look of that :)

Using those weights a 23L brewlength should come out at about 1.048 (4.6& ish) (thats calculated at 70% brewhouse efficiency so room for that to be either side) :thumb: it'll be a nice rich fawn colour, reduce the chocolate to 55g (1%) to get it lighter, I've been adding 1% chocolate malt to my beers lately, I really like it.

I'd be tempted to use challenger (bittering) & goldings (flavour / aroma) in that grainbill myself or if you fancy a single hop brew just stil with challenger throughout :thumb:

Hmm, I might brew that myself ;)

Looking forward to your first brewday pics :D

Bigger Guns, lots of ammo, Super-mega ballistic proof suit, scardy enemies, special powers, camo paint that doesn't make you look gay as a rabbit, other things all big and ard.

just need to get myself a boiler and make a mash tun, thinking of the electrim boiler. it cheap cheerful plastic but as long as it works.

I would recommend the 33L Leyland Homebrew Boiler - they'll fit an extra element to it for a small cost if you ask.

IMO the thermostats on the Electrim boilers are pretty useless.

What weights would you use Wez and how long would you boil them for?

What yeast would you then use for fermenting?

Thanks for the info, will have a look around for other options. If I bought it with 1 element would it still be good enough, ie still boil but take longer?

lmao, good suggestions. May have to go for that super-maga ballistic proof suit. :thumb:

If you go with one element you really will need to insulate the boiler, otherwise it can take an age to get to the boil and the boil is a pretty weak affair.

With really effective insulation even 1 3KW element is too powerful

Can somebody work out a hops schedule for me please, now I have a mash tun all i need is a boiler so i should be able to get this going around christmas.

Hi Bobo

I missed the post before

It depends how you want it really, 30 IBU is middle the road IBU (imo) this can be calculated when you know the AA% of your hops.

Then its a case of how much flavour and aroma you want to decide what 15 minute additions you want and if you want any 'flameout' hops (steeped)

How do you like it :)
