I was at Leeds university then. I didn't have a full grant but could still afford frequent pub lunches, couple of pints of Tetley's and mushy peas and a pie. You could go to the students Union with 50p and have 3 pints of cider and still go home with change.

I just checked on the Bank Of England website what 84p in 1976 would be today if you take into account inflation. Apparently we should be paying £5.41 for fish and chips now.

So fish & chips would be £1.35, i think they are around £6 here.

They also tasted much better back then because they used *beef dripping and wrapped them in old newspaper
