Another one which is similar which I like from time to time is Bombardier burning gold.

If you wasn't so keen on the Golden Hen I wonder if you'd like the original Old Speckled hen, it is less on the floral and a bit more of a caramelly type. Used East Kent Golding hops which for English styles I think are great

I drank a Firsty Ferret last night, very nice it was to.......hoppy and nicely golden, just as i like them........Just remember one thing, (and worth explaining to her in doors) all these 'experimental' beers your drinking means you won't have to go out and buy glass bottles as you'll soon have enough to bottle a batch, see lateral thinking will save you money :-D

I'm going to try dry hopping a cheap lager (maybe a Tescos special) and see what happens ;-)

haha.. place in liverpool does bottles very reasonably.... 50x500ml 250 caps and bench capper for £50... picked up today :-D

Do what i do and sneak it in late at night when she's asleep ;-)

Mate of mine bought a short wheel base ex MOD landrover without telling his wife, swear to God he hid it down the road for 6 months before someone finally spilled the beans on him :-D

The thing that stuck out in the Hobgoblin Gold for me was the Nelson hops. Great beer.

research continues.... but I may have found a new best friend...yes I know I could go at all 4 in one shot but want to savour and explore the aroma and taste

Old golden hen I found little too much, "grassy" i think would be the description? reminiscent of damp cut grass? Nice enough and I would not turn it down but would not be a go too beer i don't think

still got the APA's to try but this i could get to really like.... now how do I brew something similar? :-D

As far as a kit to try hopping with I reckon a Coopers or similar might be a good start, the real ale maybe or the Pale Ale.

so far I can say

1. Hobgoblin gold - easily my favourite
2. Goose Island - very good, as pointed out a big departure from lager but i can drink this all day
3. sierra nevada - another good beer, just behind goose island, softer finish
4. Old golden hen - not really to my taste but still a good beer

Picked up a couple of others yesterday to try but I can say that i will definately be adding IPA to my brew list :-D

If you go in a Wetherspoons try the Sixpoint beers in cans, American ales - Bengali Tiger, Sweet Action, Crisp. £1.99, great value.

not something i do often, usually for breakfast when I am going walking and left home at silly o'clock, not sure beer is a good idea at that time of day

They are cans perfect to enjoy with the walk.

I have just done the Coopers APA on its own its very lightly hopped so maybe a good base for experimentation.
