Ive got a tub of this at the weekend, the version for whites and it seems to be made up from "bleaching agents"

Now I'm cleaning a DJ at the moment and plan to steralize with thin bleach after a soak but do I really need to? Or is it the 0.1 percent we worry about?

Oxy clean will do.
However remember its not really a steraliser, and your pots/equipment should be well steralised before use.

yes I would take that claim with a pinch of salt, however its a good all purpose CLEANER and I use it as such

I can't see that much would live on the glass of a DJ that would survive a soak with Oxy cleaner. Really I can't.

We were told by our food hygeine teacher that many products will say they "kill 99.9% of germs" just to cover themselves. The product, when used properly, will almost certainly kill every bacteria available on a surface. Is Oxyclean marketed as a detergent or a sanitiser? Or both? If both, it might not do the job as well as a product specfically designed for either cleaning or sanitising.

I think you'd be fine just using the oxyclean as a cleaner/steriliser, as long as it's left in contact for long enough to do the job it's intended for, but if you're unsure, use steriliser too!

Controversial post turns out to be controversial!

It is sold as a stain remover so i would guess that is a cleaner, but its claiming antibacterial properties. As a cleaner it is beyond anything I have ever used

I've just soaked a demijohn for 30minutes in it and as well as being cleaner than i have ever seen it it also smells just like when i use thin bleach, and took about 10 rinses to remove the smell.

Because i was only throwing in some Robinson fruit juice for a 'punch' type affair I have missed the bleach stage. I just added a crushed campden tablet and swilled it around in some water for a minute or two and rinsed again.

I think this and a no-rinse solution may be the way forward long term.

Oxyclean is a great cleaner but I wouldn't rely on it to sterlise. All the products that say they kill 99.9% of bacteria probably kill 100% but can't claim that in case someone finds just one left.
