For over 65's I don't think weights are necessary. Stick with body weight excersises. At 68 I learned to do handstand push-ups, albeit against the wall. Paralettes are a good piece of kit, easy to make and take up no room.
Gymnastic rings are cheap and seriously good for maintaining/building muscle.


Yes I agree and even for under 65s.. Calisthenics are a great way to look after yourself and get into shape whatever age
 
I am a big advocate in keeping oneself busy as I come from a large ex-mining community and when so many of them took early retirement in the early eighties it was amazing to see so many die within a few years of retirement through inactivity. I was lucky enough to be in a position where I could sell my business and retire at the age of 55 and after 3 years I had done all the jobs in and around the house so inactivity started to set in with the usual starting to watch daytime tv at which point I thought I need a part time job. I applied for a job at Aldi and low and behold I got it which I love and it certainly keeps you fit and the mind active, retirement is not for me and do not look forward to doing it again,I have found it better than any gym membership and yes they pay me too
 
Okay, after reading all this I'll get out of my dressing gown and go get my old weights out the cupboard. Haven't moved them in years …

(Hoy! Who's glued me weighs to the floor? How do you mean there not glued? And don't tell me to stop talking to myself! And if I'm talking to myself, who are you then? Yeah, that's got you hasn't it. Don't come that "I live on my own" clap-trap again … ).

Getting my weights out is postponed for a bit due to "technical problems". I'll do it tomorrow (mañana!). Can I put my dressing gown back on now? It's a bit chilly to stand around in my Y-fronts. (Geesh, when did I last wash these Y-fronts … ).
 
Its good advice but would suggest a lot of the older generation are actually quite good at doing stuff like this. Think gardening, walking etc. People always see exercise as down the gym but just walking around shopping with the wife (I act as the donkey) is pretty much the same when she gets going!

active lifestyle is whats key. day to day we should be doing more than we currently do. I once did just 47 steps in a day at work.
