This has been on my brew list for a while now and am finally getting round to making it today. This is my version of an orange and grapefruit IPA, along similar lines to Elvis Juice. The name is a joke I have with an ex-colleague.

Yeast
pitching on a MJ West Coast yeast cake.

Will keep you updates with how it turns out.

My wife has eaten the oranges I saved for this brew, looks like it will just be grapefruit infused. We have a lemon, I might use that.

Nice one i was just looking on here last night for anyone that's brewed one. Have you tried grapefruit extract? A few drops in a pale beer is quite nice but i does a few bottles of IPA with the recommended amount and had an unpleasant aftertaste. Possible because it upped the bitterness beyond an acceptable amount.

I've not tried grapefruit extract. What I'll be doing though is soaking grapefruit peel in vodka/rum/whatever spirit I have lying around and adding it to 2ndary as well as adding liquidised grapefruit and grapefruit peel to the boil. (I've taken out as much pith as possible.)

I added some of the liquidised grapefruit to an IPA I was drinking and it tasted really good. I might add it to secondary as well to boost the grapefruit flavour.

There are some threads on here from others who have brewed Elvis Juice clones or similar beers and their methods for adding grapefruit peel. I used a peeler to peel off the peel and avoid the pith.

I'm now just on the boil, decided not to add lemons as I have no idea what that will bring to the party.

Brew almost finished, just cooling it. OG is 1.055, slightly higher than expected, but since I've been milling my own grain my efficiency has gone up sligtly and need to adjust the recipes to show this.

I ended up putting in 60g grapefruit peel and 2 liquidised grapefruits. The house smells very citrusy.

I tried some of this out of the FV today. It's at 1.007 but the yeast is still in flocculation which leads me to believe there's a bit left to go, or the yeast is cleaning up. Does not have a huge grapefruit punch to it, although carbonation would help those flavours come out more. Grapefruit is more of an aftertaste, and it does taste like a good IPA nonetheless. On bottling day I have some grapefruit sitting in gin I will pour in.

What I will add though is the liquidised grapefruit flesh has given the beer a really nice mouthfeel. It's got a good body to it. I've dry hopped the beer so should be good to bottle in 7 days.

I've tried a citrusy hop extract, the oils are in propylene glycol, like you get with some food flavorings. whilst it's supposed to be tasteless I can detect it in the beer, so I'll not be repeating that. I have also added about 8 litres of pink grapefruit juice which was too much and it comes out looking like an neipa :doh:I'd suggest 4 litres of juice. Of course you could but a standard beer and add grapefruit juice to taste that would give you a benchmark.

I bottled this today, it's a healthy 6.2%. I tried some before adding the grapefruit and it was an amazing fruity IPA, and quite tempted to brew this again as a session IPA, a bit lower ABV but same flavour and dry hops as it's great. I added 200ml of grapefruit extract which I made and it's actually really well rounded with grapefruit flavours coming through but not overpowering. I'm really looking forward to drinking this one!

Sounds delicious - i'd like to try to recreate this for my first attempt at brewing (mainly because grapefruit IPA is my favourite session beer)

can i just ask is @60min 60 minutes remaining or 60mins after starting? (noob question i know sorry)

60 minutes remaining. So the Polaris goes into the boil for the full 60 minutes, and the comet, summit , MB goes in for the last 10 mins. FO is flame out addition.

If you brew it do let me know how it comes out!
