recipe calls for flaked oats, are they the same as porridge oats? are wholegrain oats better than more modified versions?
 
rolled oats or porridge oats are fine just don't use instant porridge. Does you recipe call for a Glucan rest? if it doesn't you should do one makes for better head on the beer and reduces the risk of a stuck mash. Also toasting them for a stout is a good idea. :thumb:
 
Yes 35-40c for 20 mins with 20% of the oats weight in pale malt so for each 1kg of Oats add 200g of Pale malt. After the 20 mins raise the temp up to mash temp and add it at the start of the mash.
