Hi there,

After moving job, house and starting a family, I finally have some energy returned and am getting back to doing what I do best - drinking beer. More importantly, I like to make it myself.

First batch just started yesterday is a Steam Beer - I fell in love with Anchor Steam in my previous life and it seems like a good summer beer. Extract to get my feet wet, but hoping to move up to AG soon.

Really pleased to find this board of like-minded souls.

I also share your regard for Anchor Steam, cracking beer :thumb: White Labs do a San Francisco Lager yeast :thumb:

One question, What is this Steam Beer you speak of?? mmmm?

never heard of the stuff, but always keen to try if recommended to something... is it easy to find?

Always confused me too so I looked it up on Wikipedia.

But basically, "Historic steam beer, associated with San Francisco and the U.S. West Coast, was brewed with lager yeast without the use of refrigeration"

Yes - the Steam is a West Coast thing - quite hoppy too. For the guine artcile it shouod all be Northern Brewer. My understanding is that the West Coasters tried to make a lager but due to the higher temperatures it came out a bit aley. Rather than admit defeat the called it a steam and Anchor patented the terminology. I thought I'd go this way seeing as its summer, fancied a lighter beer, but can't get the low temperatures in my garage that I'd need for a lger.

I used a Wyeast California Common yeast. I used to use White Labs San Francisco as someone here mentioned but I can't find a White Labs stockist in the UK. Anyone know of a White Labs supplier?

Thanks for the link to the White Labs stockest.

I once made a great Alt Beer with the Dusseldorf yeast - one of my best brews ever. Gagging to make this one again, think I'll get some in for the Autumn.
