Hi all,

I am new to the forum and to brewing (very, very new) , but so far I am really enjoying it and I discovered this site a few days ago. I've been reading through various threads and have been learning a lot looking at the posts on here. However yesterday I realised that I made a mistake on my first brew regarding hops additions. So I decided that since I don't know anyone that does this sort of thing, maybe I could get some advice from the good people in this forum?

The hops additions for the NB Chinook IPA recipe are:
1oz @ 60mins
0.5 oz @ 10 mins
0.5 oz @ 1 min
1 oz dry hop

The mistake I made was to add 1 oz at the times I should have used 0.5 oz. I realised my mistake when I went to do the dry hopping yesterday and had no hops! After some frantic googling I decided to buy more hops and go ahead with the dry hopping anyway. However I couldn't get Chinook pellets at my local shop so I bought Columbus instead.

So Im wondering if I have ruined the beer? Have I used to much hops? Will the two different types of hops be an issue?

I was determined not to make exactly this kind of mistake! Anyway, thanks in advance and please excuse my ridiculous lack of knowledge on this subject!

Good evening, and welcome! Having said that: Chinook has astounding bittering capabilities, so the 10 mins addition would contribute in IBU. The 1 minute not so much.
Columbus would be an interesting aroma addition, it's a nice and pleasant hop, also a bittering molog. You might want to compensate for the higher IBU's, but not too much.

What I would do: just add 1 oz of Columbus instead of Chinook. It will turn out more bitter because of the earlier additions, but I doubt it would be ruined. In the end it will be beer.

I'd say leave it as is and not add any more hops, you've put plenty in. Also the beer hasn't been ruined! :D

I thought I should post an update on this in case anyone finds themselves in a similar situation in the future. The beer came out really good! I don't know what this kit is supposed to taste like if you follow the instructions correctly, but if it tasted like the batch I made then I would definitely buy again. It was a big hit with everyone who tried it. Even my missus who isn't really a big ale drinker.
