............ That way you can have a look at your brew anytime you feel like without possibly infecting it. I love looking in my FV's. So that's what I do

You do realise that you're sick, don't you?

Why bother looking at it when you can lean back, close your eyes, listen to the "Glub" "Glub" of escaping CO2 and dream of sinking pints of cool beer on hot summer days. :thumb: :thumb:

Now that ain't sick that's anticipation!

It doest matter how many times I brew. I never get tired of looking at the the wonder that is the krausen :ugeek:

Bleedin' leave it alone! The only true measure of what it's doing is by checking its gravity. Do that after two weeks. Next time, if you can't help yourself looking at it, cover the FV with cling film held on with a big elastic band. Then loosely rest the lid on top. Good idea! I was literally only thinking about making a fermenter lid with a window 10 mins ago.... This seems like far less faff!

Ok had a look in tonight and it's a week in but still looks the same??

You wont usually get as much krausen with a proper bottom fermenting lager yeast, you have definite signs of fermentation there, I have a lager on the go ATM and it has taken 3 weeks to ferment and never had a full covering krausen just a little bit of froth and bubbles like yours.

Here are some good tips for lager

and this is worth a read too.

Sorry, but I keep looking at all those nooks and crannies with the impressed angles, the bottom tap and tiny opening and keep thinking "infection traps?"

But I may just be very pessimistic! :thumb:

It's a lot harder than people think to infect your beer. No harm in being careful though. But what I might wonder about this particular FV is because the sides arent straight would yeast settle onto the ridges so it doesnt fall to the bottom then the beer may not be as clear as you might want it?

I reckon that once it's stuck to the sides it will stay there until washed out. :thumb:

My problem is with the little bits that MAY stay there after it's washed out!

(Two back-to-back infections put me off brewing for years and years!)

I'm happier with smooth sided FV's too.
