I`ve brewed and bottles hundreds of bottles of beers, ales etc and decided to buy a barrel. I made a lager to put in it ( the only kit I had) but although there is loads of pressure in the barrel and head on the lager it is flat.
Is that because a barrel is more suited to ale or could there be a different problem?
Thanks
Andy

hi Andy , the amount of sugar needed for a lager is greater than plastic kegs can handle , most are 85g some even go up to 120g ,But lager is def best in glass as it needs 150/200g per 23l brew , you could try adding some gas if there is a safety valve it will eject any excess gas , then if you have room in your fridge pop keg in for a few days , then when ready remove from fridge for an hour before drinking , this is the best you can do for plastic kegs . These type of kegs are good for less carbed beers though, you get a nice smooth creamy head and not much co2 in beer

Yep ! There's too much head space in a barrel for the beer to carbonate naturally hence why it's not so much of a problem for bitters etc but crap for lagers.
Bottling or corny keg IMHO is the only way with lagers and lighter beers.

I bought the kit half price so I think I`ll just ditch the lot and start brewing an ale for the keg. Far better than lager anyway.
Thanks for the responses.
Andy
