night time prowlers

Had a night time prowler last night.Could tell by footprints in the snow. Seems to have entered our garden by a gap in our fence and an outer building belonging to a neighbour whose garden backs onto ours in another street. footprints go up to the shed along onto our patio and over a fence into another garden.

Off we go to some diy shops first thing this morning bought barbed wire and anti vandal paint. Finally padlocked the ladders and we are switching our sensor outside light on tonight [ Yes it should be anyway]

Has anyone else had the pleasure off some of the pond life that crawl our streets in the early hours. Also what other tips could we do to protect our property. I know shoot the Bastards would but alas we cannot at the moment.

I have taken four steps today Paint, wire, Light, and padlock and everything in the shed bikes mower etc has been padlocked together. So hopefully i have made it harder for them and they will move on

Sit up all night like a madman drinking beer and looking out the window with the lights off, then give him some "reasonable force" ;-)

Had a few over the years, live in a cottage with only one neighbour next door so quite isolated.
I have found over the years any prowlers etc always flee rather promptly when i fire 3 rounds from a semi auto 12g shotgun out of the bedroom window ;) .

Beware of putting up barb wire, fence spikes and other sharp or pointy things - there are legal requirements regarding warning signs, minimum heights, etc (on mobile so can't provide links at the moment, but you can Google it).

I have security lights, padlock my gate and have installed CCTV after having prowlers and our cars broken into. Seems to have worked!

Top marks to the Police. we rang the non emergency number this a.m and a pcso has just come round and left leaflets and marker pens and posted leaflets to all our neighbours    Credit where it's due.
I have heard about signs etc re barbed wire and vandal paint. To be honest if i got reported because some low life had cut themselves hopefully badly it wouldn't bother me paying a fine. Swmbo was talking to the pcso and she said she doesn't see a problem with what i have done.

My neighbour put up razor wire on top of his gate (complete with warning sign). Funnily enough no one breaks into his garden anymore!
Good to see your police were so proactive. I have CCTV footage of two scroats stripping the spoilers and bodywork off of another neighbour's car - the police never even came to collect it.

Not sure of the legalities surrounding use in residential areas as it is(with SG blank) but I've seen them modified to pull the pin out of a rape alarm!
Aw man they look just the ticket, the robbing git will ***** his pants when that goes off. (So will your neighbours though lol)

i have security lights and cctv round the house after one of the kids bikes got nicked, i found the scrote and i was the 1 to be arrested. you should be fine with signs up even if not visible from all ways to get in. there is some there and thats all that matters.

Haven't got any signs up. Might see about one if they are a quid or under. Don't see why someone protecting his property has to warn other )people( that harm may come to them if they are where they have no right to be.

I'll tell you what thou that vandal paint is good. Coat hat and work trousers all had to be binned afterwards.

Thanks to all the replies Guys some constuctive some made me lol :thumb:

My ex boss wanting guard/attack dogs for the yard through the night, but was informed he had to provide somewhere safe for the robbers to run to and hide and it had to be well signed so they could find it otherwise he would have been in big barney rubble if someone got eaten, now I know you'd have a couple of tea leafs in a cage in the morning but it would be more fun to see your dogs with big full bellies;-)

if you think about cctv the swan stuff from maplins is really good quality, cheap and easy to setup.

It's ridiculous that scumbags who trespass on your property, seem to have more rights then you do.

You used to be able to embed broken glass in the top of a wall, or nail carpet grippers to your fence, but that's now illegal. You can get plastic fence spikes which don't need signs, but if you want to use anything metal, that's likely toslice someone's fingers off, you do need signs, although if your fence/wall is 6ft or more high, I really don't see why you should have to, as no one really has a legitimate reason to be climbing over it.

If you own a shotgun, a non-lethal alternative is to empty the shells and fill them with rock salt. I've not done it myself, but I'm lead to believe it's extremely effective  (Please note, as a licenced shotgun owner, I'm not advocating shooting anyone  )
