Evening all

I have attempted my second BIAB today (a jaipurand the results look very odd. It maybe normal but as I have nothing to gauge against I thought I would ask.

I am only brewing 4.5 L batches to try and get my eye in and it’s means I can use equipment I already have.

Everything went well but there seems to be huge amounts of sediment and yeast floaters (I think?)

Any thoughts?

Is all the clumping due to using Irish moss?

The OG was 1060 with 1058 being the expected yield on the recipe

Yes - Ive always found (personally) doing a small batch is harder than doing 10 L. Large amounts of trub can be a problem when doin BIAB IMO, if you want to keep it simple and not getting extra vessels and drilling holes etc etc etc - its a slippery slope of no return!. Ive just today bottled a 10 l batch and guess what only got 9 Litres, and 2 inches of crap - Ive learnt to live with it.
 
It looks like a massive cold break. What base malt did you use? Yeast floaters? Have you pitched the yeast?
Pitch the yeast and let it do its work and settle out. You've probably got a lot of detritus from the mash in there too, especially as its a BitB.
It'll probably be fine and all that stuff will compact down on the bottom of the fermenter.
 
Looks like overuse of kettle finings to me. They do tend to jellify if you use too much. 1/4 to 1/3 of a protafloc for a normal 5 gal batch is all that's needed.

P.S. I always crush mine and just use a small amount, saving the rest in a small plastic sealable bag.
 
The base is 1.06kg of pale ale and 0.06kg of Vienna

The yeast has gone in yes,CML 5.

Okey doke. Hopefully they will all settle out and I get more than 500ml out of this! :)
 
It’s setting already to be fair…..which raises questions about the one I made on Saturday without finings….looks like you will need a knife and fork!

Are you sure you didnt just throw all the ingredients in the jar and leave it
