As others I'd suggest getting a kit and a plastic bucket and get it on the go while your new kit is coming. If you like a wheat beer the Wilco one is not bad (I made one to fill a gap).

The bucket will come in handy in the future for washing bottles or batch priming etc.

Hello everyone,

Just recently looked into home brewing again after years of not being interested due to some bad experiences from friends home brews.

Honestly didn't realise the scope and sheer amount of different beers and ciders that can be made at home these days.

My plan is to buy some equipment. I want to make my own recipes, however, would you recommend going for a kit first to get used to the processes? Any information will be much appreciated.

Cheers!

The only thing buying a bog standard kit will get you used to is the cleaning and bottling process. If you have never brewed before, I would not recommend going whole hog into All Grain brewing. Perhaps a partial mash / extract with grains would be best. You could use one of Papazian's books for this as the recipes and process are very easy to follow and the beers are of a very good quality. His book will also tell you the sort of equipment you need.

Okay so I've just bought a 10 litre fermenting bucket and a couple of American IPA kits to get started. Gonna be a few weeks till I get my proper kit for boiling etc so going to try these out first.

Fermenting bucket doesn't have a hole in the lid for an airlock. Is it essential to have this?

Nope! Just raid the kitchen for a roll of Cling Film, cover the top of the FV with is and then loosely lay the FV lid on the top.

The CO2 from the brew will escape round the sides of the lid and keep any nasties out. A lot of the crew on here don't bother with Air-Locks or Blow-Off systems to control the CO2 so you should be okay. :thumb:

Many members lay the lid on top of the FV without cling film and as long as it has been sterilised it will be fine as the CO2 will escape and no nastiest will be able to get in.

Or drill a hole once you have the time and cover it with a tissue (and scotch tape along the edges) or bandaid. OR drill a hole with correct width, big enough to fit one of these and get an airlock. You'll want an airlock. It's THE thing brewers like to talk about. The activity that counts. The pulse of life. The 'bloob' of expectation.

Cheers guys.
Yeah the kit just says to lay the lid on top to allow the co2 to escape. Probably put some cling film on and let it do it's thing.
Once I get my full kit I'll be using airlock and bung.

............ . Hopefully turns out okay!

Have faith in your own abilities and the known fact that God is kind to drunks, idiots and first time brewers!

In the latter case it's to get you hooked and then, when you get complacent, He (it's about this time that you think God might be a She) lets you know that Murphy's First Law ("If it can go wrong it will go wrong.") is still alive and kicking!

Be patient and enjoy! :thumb:
