Hi guy's I'm brewing a Tripel tomorrow and have the safale abbaye yeast. My OG should be 1.084 and will hopefully end up at 9.15% abv. I have two questions really, what are peoples experiences with this yeast and more importantly should I pitch 2 packets or one? Thanks in advance.

I''ve never used this yeast so can't contribute any experiences using it but I'd definately pitch two packs. I put your figures into a couple of yeast calcs, but seeing as noone actually agree's on how many cells are actually in a packet of dried yeast I got 1.5 packs from Mr Malty (which I've read is over optomistic a calc) and over 3 packs from brewers fiend (which I think is too conservative a calc) . So I reckon two full packs should do the job

That yeast goes off like a rocket at that og i'd use more than one packet and rehydrated and a blow off tube not an airlock is essential for that one.

all of my safale abbaye brews have escaped the fv and needed clearing up

to be fair they have all been high abv brews which is why you'd use it as it is tolerant of higher abv brews. but I've done 8.0% with other yeast and it's not been so....... explosive :electric:

Thanks for your responses guy's.

My Qul, that is what I was getting from both of those calculators too, thats why it confused me as the packet says the yeast is good upto 11% abv and one11.5g packet for 20 - 30 ltr wort but I thought it couldnt be right.

Dad_of_jon I'm doing 21 litres in a 30 litre FV will I still need a blow off tube? Maybe I need to ferment this in the bath then.......not sure the wife will approve.

If Mr Malt reckons 1.4 packets and I pitch 2 will I get any unwanted flavours?

Nah. You have to massively overpitch to have any ral negative effect. The difference between 1.4 packs and 2 packs (negative effects wise) is negligable. People put new wort on whole yeast cakes from the previous brews without any real negative effects (That only becomes a problem if you do it repeatedly from brew to brew btw)

I've never brewed a beer this big and I probably never will as I don't like beer that strong but if I were do so I aerate the feck out of the wort as the yeast has a lot of work to do with an OG that high

i did 1.073og - 22 litres in a 30 litre fv and it still overflowed. the first time was 1.059og 21 liters in a 25 litre fv and that was bad.

I think at that og you have to be prepared for ....
