Muntons Belgian style Ale

Hi Guys,

I have a Muntons Belgian ale kit, it differs from most kits that I've seen and done.

After 5 days in the FV transfer to a second FV be and stir in the included 500g of spray malt light then add half a cup of yeast lees from the original FV and stir.

I don't know if it's relevant but the included yeast is Belgian Saison ale yeast 6g

My question is why go to all this trouble and not just stir the spray malt into the original FV as the yeast lees end up in the 2nd FV anyway ?

Anyone got any ideas ?

I'm thinking of doing this kit soon but was wondering if I could just do it in one FV so I can be using the other FV for another kit.

Hi Mark , I just bought this kit as well. I think the idea is to spread out the fermentables into to stages so its easier for the yeast to go through it and hit a low FG ( but I might be wrong) . I would take it off the yeast cake for secondary as per instructions and mix the spray malt with bit of warm water and then add it in and mix ( a little oxidation might be ok a this point to help the yeast but not too much ! ). I was hoping this kit would turn out similar to Leffe but after reading some reviews it might be more dry ( I hope not !) .

BTW if you have an AG set up , Malt and miller have a Belgian Blonde – Leffe clone for about £18. It includes everything you need plus some candi sugar. I have done it few months ago and it was the best beer I have ever brewed !

I'm currently working my way though a batch that I started brewing on the 12 of August, it is a lovely Belgian ale but is darker and stronger than leffe .
I stir in the dried malt when making the brew without decanting into another vessel after a week and am happy with the results.
I also brew it long to 23 litres.

The closest I have got to leffe is using brewferm's special belge but it's quite expensive as the cans only make around 50% the normal amount and you still have to add sugar and it works a out around £35-£40 for 23l batch.

My next muntons Belgian kit will arrive next week as it's on my regular roster along with bulldogs hammer of Thor, evil dog and bad cat.

Tomorrow I've got to bottle 46 litres of Hammer of Thor so it will probably be a week or so before I start another kit.

Keep us posted how you get on with your Belgian ale.

Unfortunately I haven't got AG set up, trying to find both the funds and more of a problem is finding the room, but I live in hope !

Unfortunately I only have a shower at my house but I hadn't considered using the bathroom for brew preparation, at the moment I use my rather small kitchen.

Hi, currently 2 weeks today fermenting the same AG from MM boys. Checking the fermentation has finished and the sample for reading is very bright, almost NEIPA colour orange. How have you found the colour? Is it the wheat and special grain (Dingemans) causing this? Tastes very and now for conditioning for 4 weeks.

Yes, I was bit worried with the colour. Mine was same and I thought it went bad or something but there was nothing wrong with it !!!
One thing I might add, the best bottle of that brew was the one I opened after few months, it really makes a difference if you leave it for some time. Shame I only had one left by then

that’s the problem with this lovely style of beer, bottle conditioned, the waiting game........
