Thinking of brewing tomorrow to use a kg Mittelfrueh hops, which I have in the freezer. I got the gear out of the garage today, having last brewed on the 17th December 2008, only to find a lot of black mould on most surfaces.
Tonight has been spent bleaching everything. I also managed to snap one of the inlet ports of one of the March 809 pumps when rolling the gear into the kitchen  ...I wonder how much that will cost, $26 from the US, but I've sent a e-mail to March U.K...keep your fingers croosed for me

Anyhow, I'm thinking a 'strong' pale.

60 ltr brew length
75% efficeincy assumed
OG 1.064, IBU 60.9, FG, whatever it will be, ABV over 6%

In the mash at 66 deg c for 90 mins

16.5kg Maris Otter
1kg Wheat malt

First wort hopping

800g 1.95% AA Hallertauer Mittelfrueh (90 mins)
80 deg steep for 15 minutes, 150g Hallertauer Mittelfrueh

Yeast US 05

I just hope I manage to sort some form of wort cooling out for tomorrow

I've never 'winged' a recipe before...looking forward to it

my best brews have been from "winging it" so i've got my fingers and toes crossed for you mate :thumb:

gotta get me some Hallertauer... i miss it dearly

900g Of hops in 60L . . . Even if it is only 1.9%

You ain't going to get 60L out of that brew pot

Beersmith is telling me I need an 80ltr pre boil volume
Never had that much in it...sure it will handle it though
I'm wondering if the hops will fit

i've had 85L out of my 100L nordic pot mate... it's bloody close and needs constant attention... i keep 10L of wort on standby and add it when the boil starts getting a bit too harsh. usually end up adding about 6L over the course of a 60 min boil.

80L will give you a bit more breathing space. :thumb:

Any advice Aleman on using so many hops would be much appreciated ;)
I may drop the recipe to 5% and use a whole lot of steep hops....haven't really decided on that yet.
6% was arrived at partly due to wanting to use the hops in one go.

If you have to use them up in one go  then something similar to what you have done is probably the best way to go . . . I would probably gone 800g/200g split as you want to really make use of that wonderful Mittlefruh aroma. . . . Another thing is to be prepared to do a hop sparge (just a couple of litres of boiling water sprinkled over the top, or even batch sparge it ;) )as those puppies are really going to absorb/hold back a lot of wort

Cheers Aleman :thumb:

I ordered a new pump housing from March yesterday, paid by bacs, and it was here today, great service

Brewing tomorrow  , going to have a fiddle with the recipe :hmm:

Recipe altered. I'm going to go for a 800/150 split and I'm going to dry hop with the extra 50g.

So a lot of firsts on this brew, I'm using a hop I've never used, in quantities I've never used, and I'm dry hopping a keg, which I've never done either....sounds like fun and pictures will follow. I might even have my new IC ready for this brew. It's a dual feed quad 5m x 8mm jobby.

Kick off 0730 tomorrow

A lot of grain, 17.5kg, running mash liquor to tun, the mash and cloudy first recirc
