Apologies if this is the wrong sub-forum. Anyone tried these before? I'm just thinking for a job like wiping my baster before I take a sample from the FV. I'll get some StarSan at some point and keep a squirty bottle of that handy, but in the meantime I was wondering if these are any good.

Well I use Milton tablets for my sanitizing water so ill be using these wipes for my utensils:D cheers. You don't need star san bud. Iv been brewing for 12 month and iv never had an infected brew. Think about it. If Milton is good enough for new born babys wrapped up in bubble wrap then Milton is more than qualified for sterilizing your gear. Save yourself son pennies and use Milton :D

Boiling water would be better methinks,

But I've always made up in a FV 10-15 L of milton fluid and put all my plastic items like siphon, funnels etc in there to soak and use boiling water for glass items, bottles and demijohns. I get it from pound shops

You don't have to rinse Milton.

You're right. This is directly from their website

Do you have to rinse bottles and teats before using them?
After removing from the Milton solution, bottles and teats can be drained and used immediately - no need to rinse.

The WHO (World Health Organisation) considers that the acceptable level of chlorine for drinking water is at 5 mg/l that 0.5% of the solution. In the Milton sterilising solution (made up either with the Sterilising Fluid or Tablets) there is 0.012% of chlorine which is far less than the level accepted by the WHO. This explains why it is not necessary to rinse. Also there is a risk of contaminating the baby accessories again by rinsing them.

Milton is fine for sprogs, the chlorine level is below sprog slaying levels. However, your not brewing a sprog your brewing beer.
It's possible for the yeast to react with the chlorine to produce chlorophenols which give a medicinal, TCP off flavour to beer. Having said that loads of people seem to use milton tabs and not rinse them so the chlorine levels are probably so low that the risk of producing chlorophenol off flavours appears to be low too

I use Milton tablets but only make wine so don't rinse, i am not saying you are wrong saying beer brewers do not need to rinse but if goes against everything I have read in the beer forums.

I have never used it and I take your word for it, I am sure I have read negative things about milton tablets for beer brewing

But if it works for you :thumb:

Ok for your interest I have been goggling about this and found a letter from Milton to a home brewer who asked is it ok for beer making.
It seems rinsing is recommended by Milton, so I'll continue with my boiling water rinse.

Thank you for your email regarding Milton, I apologise for the delay in
responding to your enquiry.

I have checked with the manufacturer and can confirm that Milton tablets
and solutions can be used to sterilise home brew equipment.

The recommended dilution is 30ml of Milton (liquid) - 5l cold water,
leave it for 30 minutes and then rinse out.

Please note that Milton should not be used on metals on a regular basis
as it can corrode metal.

I hope that this answers your question. However, should have any further
queries, please do not hesitate to contact customer services on 0844 243
6661.

Kind Regards

I just rang Milton and asked what to rinse it with and they said that it will be fine no need to rinse, just drain and use, but I think I'll still carry on rinsing with boiling water.

The lady also said she would be personally willing to test any donated beer for off tastes, ha ha ha

Bloody hell Cheapy, you're thorough..!! :thumb:

I'd rinse with all the bigger bits of kit anyway. I'd really just thought of the wipes for bits with minimal or very brief contact, like my turkey baster or the end of the thermometer.
